Style At Home: Home of Alice + Olivia Designer Stacy Bendet

InStyle Magazine recently did a piece showcasing the whimsical  Manhattan home of Alice + Olivia designer, Stacy Bendet.  Much like her designs, Bendet’s home is vibrant, playful and somewhat over the top.

She describes her home decor method as “black and white base punctuated with a riot of bright tones.” As you read on, you’ll find she’s 100% successful in achieving an Alice in Wonderland look.

I absolutely had to share this one of a kind home with my readers. The article was not available online, so please excuse my poor quality scanned images.

Bendet displays her love of art immediately with the entryway lined with work from Claes Oldenburg. Artists lining the walls include names among the likes of Schnabels and Yellin too. Needless to say, it’s an impressive collection.

Bendet’s sitting room (pictured above) is her favorite area of the home.  She says, “It has a playful chic and a sexiness I love.” Bendet is a mother of 2 small children. You may be asking how can such an extravagant home still be livable with a 2 and a 4-year-old? Bendet’s answer: incorporating the children’s toys into the decor. She uses the toys as inspiration, rather than a nuisance.

Daughter, Eloise’s (Age 4), room is pictured above. As you can tell from the photo, she is a fashionista in the making. In case you haven’t guessed, her favorite color is purple. Bendet lets her home inspire her clothing and boutiques and vice versa. Eloise’s playhouse was actually a display in an A + O boutique.

Wow, what a shoe closet! Her platforms and heels are organized by color and pattern. I’m guessing many of those are her own designs. I’d love to see how she displays her clothes.

One of my favorite elements of her home is the yard. It’s always interesting to see how city folks make use of teeny tiny spaces. According to Bendet, “The backyard has a wonderland feeling to it– a slightly trippy, avant-garde vibe. I want every room to be that way.”

I feel like I’ve just gone on a tour in fantasy land. I imagine it’s 10x more fab in person.

Keep Deer Out of Your Garden

You may have seen a picture I posted to Twitter earlier this week of a plant in my yard which was mangled by a deer. Surely, I’m not the only one frustrated with critters getting into my landscaping, so I hit the internet to research how to keep them away.

I found some great tips from an article on HGTV’s website. The most effective ways to keep deer from destroying your garden are 1. Planting things they don’t like and 2. Putting temporary fencing or caging around the garden.

Deers Will Likely Eat:

  • Tulips
  • Laurel
  • Forsythia
  • Japanese Yew
  • Crocus
  • Pansies

Deers Are Less Likely To Eat:

  • English Holly
  • Yucca
  • Daisies
  • Tiger Lilies
  • Wisteria
  • Bougainvillea
  • Yarrow
  • Iris
  • Geraniums
  • Narcissus
  • Dahlias

Now, keeping deer out of your yard is where it gets complicated. Vials of urine from predators seem to be most effective in repelling deer. You may hear that human hair, moth balls, human urine and blood meal can be effective repellents. Not true. If the deer is hungry, it’s going to eat. Some methods may work temporarily, but are not a long-term solution to the problem.

The article mentioned a book called Solving Deer Problems by Peter Loewer. In the book Loewer suggests these 3 remedies.

  •  Not Tonight Deer, is a powder that smells like eggs and tastes like pepper. It is sprayed around the perimeter of the garden and can be found at
  • Liquid Fence, available at, is a nontoxic mix of egg and garlic that lasts a month before it has to be renewed.
  • Carnivore urine is available at and is a collection of urine from bobcats, coyotes, foxes and wolves. The urine sends a message to animals that a meat-eating animal is roaming the garden.

Are any of you having the same problem? Have you had any lucky with any of these solutions or a new one to share? I’d love to hear what you have to say. Tweet solutions to me @phyllisolive or share them on my Facebook Page.
